The Museum has the function of collecting, studying and conserving the heritage of objects, images, written and oral testimonies concerning the history of eyewear and other optical instruments in its various forms, and of documenting the development of the eyewear industry and of its outbuildings in the Province of Belluno. The enhancement of this heritage and the dissemination of the historical and cultural aspects underlying it constitute another important objective of this cultural institution. The museum preserves among its collections some truly exceptional finds, made with special and unexpected materials: glasses made from a whalebone, carved and stained ivory telescopes, almost like a lace, small glasses inserted at the ends of fans or in the handle of walking sticks. And then hat or wig glasses, in use when rigid temples had not yet been invented. The surprising history of the glasses deserves to be discovered little by little, passing through the various exhibition rooms of the Museum in succession.
